Rhinoplasty is the surgery of reshaping the nose in the most appropriate way for the face after a detailed examination of the anatomy of the nose, taking into account the expectations and demands of the person.
There are many nose structures. Big nose, small nose, upturned, curved and hooked nose, etc. People who do not like the shape of the nose and therefore experience social or psychological distress have rhinoplasty.
Do I need rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can be an alternative for people who are not happy with the appearance of their nose. Noses that are arched, appear large or have a low tip, and have curvatures can be treated with surgery. The problems of patients with breathing problems can also be solved simultaneously during these procedures.
Most of the people who have septum deviation in the nose, ie nasal cartilage and bone curvature, also have curvatures in the external shape of their nose. Unfortunately, septum deviation rates are over 80% in our geography. This condition can cause serious breathing problems. Many patients who plan to have surgery for the curvature inside the nose also consider having surgery for the external appearance of the nose during the same surgery.
ASK OUR DOCTOR
Which anaesthesia is used?
Nose surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
How long will the operation take?
It takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. However, in some cases, the operation time may be longer because it requires cartilage to be removed from the ear or rib.
Is rhinoplasty performed without surgery?
Although non-surgical rhinoplasty sounds very attractive, most of the time this term is used commercially to attract people’s attention. Because a surgical intervention is required to treat and correct a nose in real terms. Applications called non-surgical nose aesthetics;
- Nose filling
Small arches and depressions can be hidden with nasal filling, but breathing problems or curvatures are never treated with non-surgical procedures. Another detail you should know about the nasal filling procedure is that the filling application always enlarges the area where it is applied. For this reason, if the nasal arch is hidden by filling a large amount of filler, your nose will also grow in direct proportion.
- Nose tip botox
Btoks application reduces or eliminates the wrinkle effect by blocking the muscles in the area where it is applied. The duration of effect is not permanent, although it varies from person to person, it lasts an average of 4-5 months. If there are involuntary movements at the tip of the nose, botox application can be performed to temporarily freeze this image, but this procedure should be selected by the physician and the patient with a good analysis. Because not every nose may be suitable to respond to this procedure.
- Nose tip lift with thread
This is often asked by patients who are afraid of this operation or who cannot allocate a budget for this work. However, unfortunately, the tip of the nose does not get a more lifted appearance with ropes or straps. This is not permanently possible. In order for the tip of the nose to have a more raised appearance, procedures such as nose surgery or Tipplasty, which only intervenes in the tip of the nose, should be performed.
Things you should know before rhinoplasty
The things you need to know and do before the operation are as follows;
- Although advanced surgical methods will be used in rhinoplasty surgeries, there is a period of rest for every patient. Do not forget that you need to rest for a while for your recovery. You cannot return to work the day after the operation.
- On the morning of the operation, you must enter the hospital with a certain fasting period. All patients who will receive general anaesthesia are given hunger and satiety information. However, sometimes patients who think that this is not very important may want to make small snacks to avoid blood sugar problems. Small snacks that seem innocent to you can sometimes even cause your surgery to be postponed. The issue of fasting before anaesthesia is extremely important and you should definitely get information about the duration of fasting from your physician or team.
- You will have post-operative dressings and care. Making these dressings regularly and completely will positively affect your healing process.
- After the operation, you should take the medication prescribed by your doctor in the dose recommended by your doctor, not more or less.
- The temperature of the room where you will rest should not be too hot. Warm environments close to cool should be preferred. High heat can cause your oedema to increase.
- A common mistake after nose surgery is applying ice on the eyes. The correct application is cool, not ice. If you use gel pads, you should store them in the crisper, not in the freezer. If you are going to use ice in plastic gloves, these ices should be slightly melted and watered.
- You should definitely keep your nasal entrances clean, and if there are crusts, slimy tissues or blood clots in the nasal entrances, you should definitely clean them. If you do not clean your nose at all until the dressing, there may be a risk of infection.
- There is no restriction on eating after rhinoplasty. You should eat well, consume plenty of fluids and quickly return to normal life by doing your needs such as toilet and changing clothes on your own. This is not an operation that will require bed rest for a long time.
- Lie flat, not on your side, until you receive confirmation from your doctor. The use of a double pillow can help you for a comfortable position.
- In order to avoid breathing problems, use your ocean water sprays recommended after surgery as prescribed by your physician and with the required frequency. If you do not use the spray correctly, the ocean water will not go to the nostrils and the application will not achieve its purpose.
The 12 most curious questions after surgery…
Since your postoperative care will directly affect your recovery process, we attach great importance to this issue. The most frequently asked questions about the postoperative period:
- Is there any pain or soreness after the operation?
Since the operation is performed under general anaesthesia, there is no pain during the operation. After the surgery, the new generation silicone supports, which are currently applied to ensure comfortable breathing instead of the nasal tampons previously used, do not cause pain.
- Will there be bruising and swelling after rhinoplasty?
At the end of the first week, the plaster splint is removed. There are still swellings in the nose and the detention bags on the cheeks. These swellings disappear within 15 days. The bruises are gone.
- Will postoperative oedema occur?
We recommend cool application to our patients to minimise the oedema that may occur immediately after the surgery. Cool applications for 10 minutes every hour with the gels they will store in the crisper (attention, not in the freezer) will relax the skin and prevent the formation of oedema. Please do not neglect cold application for the first three days.
- Should I use medication after the operation?
You can use appropriate medication under the supervision of a doctor.
- Will there be a scar?
Since a small incision is made at the junction of the nose and lip in the open technique, a slight scar may remain after surgery. In the closed technique, since the incision is made in this part, there is no scarring.
- How long will I stay in the hospital?
After your nose surgery, you can be discharged at night if you wish and you can prefer your comfortable bed at home. Nose surgeries are relatively easy operations, if you wish, you can stay under observation in the hospital overnight and leave the hospital the day after the operation. It is always beneficial to make this decision together with your physician.
- When can I wear sunglasses?
If no procedure has been performed on the bones, you can wear the sunglasses you want from 4 weeks onwards.
- How long is the recovery period?
The postoperative recovery period may vary depending on the technique used in the surgery, the type of intervention performed technically and the personal characteristics of the patient. The average recovery period after rhinoplasty varies between 7 and 10 days. Many patients can easily return to work or school in as little as one week.
- Can I swim in the sea afterwards?
You can swim in the sea and sunbathe 2 weeks after the plastic protector on your nose is removed.
- When can I start work?
The answer to this question is different for everyone. If you are in good general health, do sports, do not smoke, are 20-40 years old, and follow the care recommendations given by your doctor after surgery, you can start working within 4-5 days after surgery.
- Can I smoke?
You should not smoke or drink alcohol before or after the operation, or you should limit your intake considerably after the operation.
- What should I pay attention to after the operation?
Make sure that you drink the amount of fluid recommended by your doctor. Also, lips should not remain dry. They should be constantly wetted with the help of a cloth. The tampons placed in the nose should be very careful and should not be moved. Pay attention to what your doctor says and use only the medicines prescribed by the doctor and do not take extra medication. It is necessary to use the recommended ocean water spray abundantly so that the breathing channels are not blocked. The nose should always be clean after the operation. If there are crusts and blood clots in the nasal entrances, they should be cleaned and antibiotic cream should be applied to the stitches. Please pay attention to this care especially in the first week.
Why do rhinoplasty prices differ?
- Rhinoplasty prices vary according to the clinic where the surgery is performed and the preferred physician.
- Factors such as what kind of intervention will be performed in the nose area can also be decisive at the price point. Depending on the hospital where the operation will be performed, it varies according to whether the person has insurance and whether the insurance covers it.
- The most important issue in an operation is that the result of the operation satisfies the patient.
- Costs are of course important but should always be considered in the second plan. The priority should always be to achieve a result that you can be happy with.

Questions from you
Before meeting with your physician, try to understand very well the features in your nose that do not make you happy and that you want to change. Ask your physician to show patients with similar characteristics to these problems. Ask your physician’s opinions on these issues. You should not forget that medical sciences are open to interpretation. Different physicians may have different opinions on the same subject. Therefore, you can reach a happy ending more easily with the physician who is closest to your own opinion and who understands you best.
Also remember that sometimes the conditions you request may not be realistic or modifiable. Your doctor’s opinion on this matter is also very important.
Believe that the most accurate physician may not be the one who operated on you, but the one who refused your surgery, perhaps for justifiable reasons, and who distanced you from rhinoplasty.
I think this information is very important before rhinoplasty surgery. I believe that the fear-anxiety before the surgery can only be overcome with real and detailed information. People are afraid of what they do not know. Therefore, I think that their mastery of all processes is one of the important factors in making my patients comfortable.
If you study these programmes, you will become a master user in a few days. Therefore, you can work on your preoperative photograph at home and create a very beautiful nose.
The real question starts here: How realistic are these computer programmes? I take photos of all my patients, record them, even take them again at all controls and watch the healing period.
The question of massage after surgery is a question we have often heard from patients. However, it should be noted that massages do not correct the nose after a poorly performed surgery or distort the shape of the nose after a well performed surgery.
I do not recommend nasal massage to my own patients. Although many patients think that massage will shape the nose, I recommend cleaning and care to increase the oxygenation level of the skin during the healing period.
It is finalised within one year.
One of the most important reasons why you have difficulty breathing through your nose is the curvatures in your cartilage and bones. Therefore, you should definitely be examined by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist before your surgery. Because the reason why you cannot breathe may not be so simple. A detailed nasal endoscopic examination will give very important information.
It is also very important to evaluate the condition of your nasal flesh, the presence of allergic diseases, the presence of other problems such as sinusitis and polyps. Otherwise, it is not possible to get good air through your nose. This is the reason for the beautiful but non-functioning noses that we encounter very often.
This is the point where plastic surgeons make a mistake. Your breath may not improve only by correcting the nasal cartilage-bones.
Deviation, popularly known as nasal bone curvature, is the curvature of the cartilage bone wall in the middle of the nose. People with nasal bone curvature usually complain of nasal congestion and inability to breathe.
The important thing is not the age limit, but the development of bone and cartilage structure. However, although there is no written rule in aesthetic surgeries, experts do not recommend applications under the age of 18. Legally, the signature of the family is required for children under the age of 15.
I operate on dozens of patients from abroad every year. We are now able to serve my patients abroad with our team that will help them with airport-hotel-hospital transfers, hotel accommodation, and touristic trips in Istanbul if they wish. If you fill out the contact form for your requests in this regard, we will get back to you.
If it becomes difficult to breathe through one of the nostrils due to a curvature in the structure called “septum”, which forms the midline of your nose, consisting of bone in the back and cartilage in the front, this is called “Septum deviation”. While the curvature in the septum can sometimes be corrected without surgery with a simple surgical intervention, sometimes it can be corrected with aesthetic reconstruction using cartilages taken from the ear or rib.
At the junction of the tip of the nose with the dorsum of the nose, at the transition point where the air flow makes a natural turbulence, there is a transition problem that is invisible to the eye but becomes apparent when breathing deeply. When breathing strongly, the wings of the nose collapse inwards, making breathing difficult. If the wings of the nose collapse inwards when breathing normally, the problem arises. Most of the time, no physical problem is observed on examination. The problem is functional.
An experienced surgeon handles all problems simultaneously during nose surgery. Nasal flesh problem and breathing problems can also be solved simultaneously. There is no need to divide functional problems and aesthetic problems into two different operations. In fact, trying to solve these problems in two different operations is harmful for the patient.
In order for rhinoplasty surgery to be successful, solid cartilage tissues are needed to change the shape of your nose in the way you want.
I liken this surgery to construction. Just as materials such as iron, sand and cement are needed during construction, cartilage and bone tissues are needed in rhinoplasty. If you have health and aesthetic surgeries at different times, if your nasal cartilages are removed and unusable in the first surgery, this will cause cartilage deficiency in your second nose surgery. The tissue deficiency in your second surgery, that is, in your nasal construction (because your nose does not have enough cartilage in it) will require cartilage from your rib.
There is no permanent loss of smell after nose surgeries. It is normal to feel different sensitivities while the tissues in the nose have not fully healed in the new stages of the surgery, but nose surgeries do not permanently lose your sense of smell.
The accumulation of crusts, blood clots or slimy tissues in the nasal cavities that are not well cared for during the healing process restricts the person’s ability to smell and breathe. For this reason, it will positively affect your healing process if you perform the care provided to you fully and regularly after rhinoplasty surgery.
There is no surgery with zero risk. The important thing is to have a doctor who knows these risks well and tries to take precautions against them as much as possible. The second important point is to know that your doctor will be behind you if there are complications despite everything.
If the asymmetry is caused by the facial structure, this asymmetry continues after the surgery. Because the human face never has complete symmetry. The height distances of the two ears, two eyes or cheeks are always different from each other. Since the asymmetries on the face will continue after the surgery, those caused by this will continue, but as long as the surgery is performed correctly and successfully, it will not cause new asymmetries.
The human face never has complete symmetry. Therefore, instead of focusing on millimetric differences before or after surgery, it is necessary to concentrate on the whole and see facial harmony. Although very large asymmetries can be brought to a more normal level with procedures such as fat filling, it is not possible to completely eliminate asymmetries from creation.
Rhinoplasty is frequently requested by men today. Both problems related to breathing function and treatments for the appearance of the nose can be performed simultaneously.
Since male patients have a much thicker skin than women, their recovery period will also be somewhat longer. For a male patient with a busy work life, a 1-week rest period is quite sufficient. After the first dressing on the 7th day, the patient can return to his social and business life on the 8th day.
Surgeries for male patients are a delicate balancing act. The patient should have a nose that does not look feminine after surgery, natural and in harmony with his face. The new shape of the nose can be shaped according to the patient’s expectations. Communication in preoperative interviews forms the backbone of success.
Although male and female rhinoplasty seem to be based on the same principles, male rhinoplasty is an operation that should be planned very carefully.
Because factors such as nasal curvature and degree of lift, which are created carelessly and carelessly during rhinoplasty, can lead to a feminine result after surgery. For this reason, in male rhinoplasty, the angle of the nose should be calculated very meticulously and the shape of the nasal dorsum should be planned correctly.
Naturalness and natural appearance should be considered as an important element of male rhinoplasty surgery. For this reason, I encounter many male patients who still want a slight arch on the back of the nose after surgery. I find this request very justified.
Another very important factor in male rhinoplasty is that men often have thick skin.
With tipplasty, that is, nasal tip aesthetics, aesthetics can be performed only in the tip of the nose without interfering with the nasal arch. This procedure is a much shorter and easier procedure compared to rhinoplasty.
Nasal tip aesthetic surgery allows the patient to be discharged on the same day without the need for hospitalisation. Only the type area (tip of the nose) is changed without any change in the back of the nose.
After nasal tip surgery, silicone air channel strips can sometimes be placed in the breathing channels, but no plaster is placed on the back of the nose after these surgeries. There will be a bandage on the tip of the nose that will not disturb the patient. These bandages are often removed after the first 5 days.
Of course, patients suffering from sinusitis can have nose surgery. However, sinus surgery may require treatment with very different techniques and approaches than rhinoplasty surgery. Both processes can be done simultaneously or at different times. With different approaches for sinusitis patients, there will be a significant increase in the quality of life of these patients. If the patient also requests a change in the appearance of the nose, it is possible to perform two surgeries at the same time.
There are two reasons for this. Firstly, her nose is not really beautiful and the patient rightly does not like her nose and is not happy. Secondly, her nose can be beautiful on its own. However, it may not be compatible with his face. Therefore, it is a very good example that explains that beautifying the nose alone does not actually make the patient happy.
What needs to be done here is to evaluate the patient’s face and perceive that the face and beauty are a whole.
• Thick skinned nose
• Long nose
• Short nose
• Crooked nose
• Arched nose
• Saddle nose
• Male rhinoplasty
After a nose surgery performed with the correct technique and approach, the tip of the nose will not fall off. Because the intranasal support in these surgeries is based on solid foundations and the positive result you will receive after the surgery will last a lifetime. However, nasal tip drooping may occur in the long term after incorrect and incomplete interventions or inexperienced surgeries that remove excess cartilage from the inside. With the corrective surgery, nose tip support is restored. With the surgical facilities and techniques we have today, we can even treat the completely collapsed noses of people who have had multiple unsuccessful nose surgeries.
Nose rasping is the process of thinning the bridge of the nose and shaping it into the desired shape, performed during rhinoplasty surgery. Currently, this process can be done very easily with sound waves without the need for rasping with a piezo device.
Piezo is an advanced surgical system and this system works only with sound waves and is sensitive to bone tissue. Therefore, mini saws that work with this sound wave do not damage the veins, soft tissues, nerves and skin of patients during surgery. This significantly shortens the patient’s recovery period.
Since the traumas seen during nose rasping in old techniques are not seen in the piezo system working with sound waves, patients can return to their social and business life very comfortably within a few days.
The inside of our nose is the size of a matchbox. It is not a very large place. And there is a partition inside that separates the two holes. Most surgeries are performed as if it were caused by the curvature there.
Why are there two holes in our nose?
One hole and the other hole of our nose do this job by taking turns. One works for 3 hours and the other works for 3 hours.
It is possible to have the nose you want after a well-planned and performed surgery performed by an experienced physician. Studies show that revision nose rates are below 5 percent. I think the most important thing you need to know about revision surgeries as a surgery candidate is the scope, that is, the size of this second surgery.
You may also have to undergo revision surgery due to very small millimetric asymmetries or superficial roughnesses in your nose, in which case these problems can be corrected with very short local procedures. Or you may have collapses in your nose, asymmetries, breathing problems, and in the second surgery, cartilage may need to be removed from your ear or ribs.
So, you may feel the need for truly comprehensive nose surgery. It is necessary to clearly distinguish these two surgeries. I define the second one as revision nose surgery.
- I think it is right for the physician and the nose surgery candidate to meet at least twice before the surgery.
- I think that the nose surgery candidate’s expectations should be listened to at the first meeting, and the features of his nose and face should be examined through the photographs taken. I also think that the first meeting is important to give detailed information about nose surgery or combined surgeries.
- During the period until the second interview, the nose surgery candidate will have enough time to read the information and consent forms given to him in detail. This way, he will have time to ask himself at length whether he really wants the surgery.
- In the second meeting, I believe that the smallest details of the nose surgery candidate’s surgery should be discussed with him/her and that a completely personalized surgery plan should be created together.
- I think it is very useful for the candidate to have a companion during the second interview. I think the surgery is also a very special moment. I think these meetings are very important in terms of providing detailed information about the surgery to the companions who will help with this part of life.
